Baby Boomers Bring Sex into Nursing Homes
Baby boomers are the generation that embraced sexual freedom and natural healing therapies. This year, the first baby boomers turned 70, and some are entering care facilities. For themselves — and their parents — they are fighting for rights as consenting adults. Yet facilities are still stuck in “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policies.
California Health Report interviewed sexual surrogates for lonely, institutionalized elders. Professional surrogates have found a customer base in elder-care patients who have been denied sex (but no longer). Boomer children are recognizing their parents sex needs too.
In a courageous and controversial article, journalist Matt Perry reports on how a San Francisco facility allows sexual healing work within its community.
“If we had people going in and holding hands and rubbing feet we wouldn’t even be talking about surrogates.”
Long term care facilities do use non-sexual touch to calm aggressive dementia patients. However this is limited to a hand on the shoulder, walking arm-in-arm or holding hands for short periods. Touch is more necessary for older adults because they have 75% fewer “touch receptors” than 20-year olds. Read about the importance of touch at Keep Mom at Home.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

The Politics of Aging
“There is no policy without politics.”
This week saw both presidential candidates do battle in the public arena over who can be more generous with caregiving benefits. This is the first time caregiving has become a core issue in political debate.
At a senior healthcare conference this week, Robert Blancato offered tips for organizations who want to shape policy using “wholesale politics”:
- A change in presidential administration is a huge opportunity. New officials and their staffers will need to be educated.
- Advocacy is the ultimate contact sport, and you never want to be late to the game.
- Talk about your issues in constituency terms.
- Be informed, reliable, constant and adaptable, so that you can then become an information resource to politicians.
- Know your house member, know their staffers, be at their committee meetings, and be a resource.

Digital will overtake TV advertising this year
Digital advertising spending growth is driven by mobile advertising and video advertising. Online display advertising is now dominated by Facebook ads. Mobile advertising is driven by Google mobile search advertising.
Television ad spending is still growing. 2016 growth is driven by political ads and the Olympics. See the forecast here.
